Adolf Weil was smooth as can be while Kent Howerton trys to cut ahead of him.

At this point in the race Billy Grossi has Brad Lackey closing in on him. He is cross rutted and trying to correct as the crowd encourages the two to go for it. Some how Grossi stayed upright.

For many riders just to survive a few laps had to be extremely tiring. Their bikes weighed twice as much as normal from all the muck.

I can remember clearly watching as each rider came up this section during practice. Graham Noyce, a future world champion, approached this like a trials ride. A torque filled mid gear wheelie and steady as she goes. He rode right along the edge of the muddy trench in the middle of the track.
