104hillCMX.jpg

This was about half way up one of the biggest hills during practice.  Notice the deep rut where water eroded down to the valley as Roger DeCoster works his magic.

Weil and Howerton CMX.jpg

Adolf Weil was smooth as can be while Kent Howerton trys to cut ahead of him.

StPeters772CMX.jpg

Jimmy Ellis looks really tired after trying to climb one of the muddy slopes.

cross rutted.jpg

At this point in the race Billy Grossi has Brad Lackey closing in on him.  He is cross rutted and trying to correct as the crowd encourages the two to go for it.  Some how Grossi stayed upright.

Hannah not going fast.jpg

One of the few pictures you will see of Bob Hannah not going fast!

Mud Hole.jpg

For many riders just to survive a few laps had to be extremely tiring.  Their bikes weighed twice as much as normal from all the muck.

Noyce Wheelie.jpg

I can remember clearly watching as each rider came up this section during practice.  Graham Noyce, a future world champion, approached this like a trials ride. A torque filled mid gear wheelie and steady as she goes.  He rode right along the edge of the muddy trench in the middle of the track.
